Rudbeckia hirta

A star of America’s wildflower meadows, the Black-Eyed Susan’s bright yellow rays and chocolate-brown centers create a classic country charm. Native to the prairies and open woodlands of North America, it became widespread in English and American ornamental gardens by the mid-19th century. Some of the earliest records of Rudbeckia hirta seeds being offered for sale appear in specialized horticultural catalogs from the 1870s, making this cheerful wildflower a long-standing favorite among gardeners seeking easy-care, pollinator-friendly blooms.

Growing Tips & Stratification:

  • Soil & Sun: Prefers full sun and well-draining soil but tolerates various conditions.
  • Sowing: Sow seeds outdoors in early spring or late fall.
  • Stratification: Recommended. A period of cold stratification (2–4 weeks) can significantly boost germination success. Place seeds in damp/moist sand, vermiculite, or coco coir and place in the fridge or sow outside in late fall.

1/4-1/2tsp seed minimum per packet. Germ 82%  01/25.
